A longer appointment may appeal to you when you want focused time for trauma work. Before choosing that format, it helps to talk about what you hope to work on, how you respond to distress, and the support you have outside appointments.
At Mended Heart Counseling, the EMDR Intensive Program offers a three-hour appointment within an individualized treatment plan. A consultation is the starting point for discussing the program. Assessment, preparation, and clinical fit guide whether this option is appropriate for you.

🌿 What is an EMDR intensive?
An intensive uses concentrated treatment time organized around an agreed focus. The details vary between practices, so it is important to ask what a particular program includes.
EMDRIA’s discussion of EMDR intensives explores readiness, therapist experience, and questions prospective clients can ask. At Mended Heart, the format is considered as part of care rather than chosen on session length alone.
Learn about the underlying approach on our online EMDR therapy page. More time in one appointment does not guarantee a particular result or mean that all your care will fit into one visit.
🌱 Preparation and your goals come first
We start by discussing what brings you to therapy and what you hope will change. Assessment can include your history, present circumstances, health, supports, and how you respond to distress. You can ask what preparation may be needed before an intensive is scheduled.
We can also talk about practical arrangements: privacy during telehealth, breaks, how to pause, what happens if the internet connection drops, and plans for support and follow-up. Those details deserve attention before you commit your time or money.
My EMDRIA contribution on preparation reflects the importance I place on patience and readiness in trauma work.
Considering whether this option fits
An intensive is one possible format for EMDR care. Assessment may lead to a recommendation for that format, shorter sessions, further preparation, or another kind of support.
Please raise concerns about dissociation, feeling overwhelmed, current safety, or other care you are receiving. A diagnosis or trauma history alone does not determine suitability. If another therapist is involved, coordination can be discussed with your permission.

Common questions
Can I book an intensive as my first appointment?
Begin with a consultation. We can talk about the assessment and preparation needed and whether an intensive is an appropriate next step.
Will one intensive complete my treatment?
There is no fixed outcome or treatment timeline for everyone. The plan may include further sessions or follow-up based on your needs and response.
Do I have to choose between an intensive and regular therapy now?
No. You can ask questions before deciding. Other current options include 50-minute individual sessions and 75-minute extended trauma/EMDR sessions.
Is this an emergency service?
No. An intensive is planned psychotherapy and does not provide emergency response or immediate crisis care.
🌸 Let’s talk about what you need
You can bring questions about the format, the fee, or what preparation might involve. A consultation gives us a chance to discuss your goals before you decide whether to explore an intensive.
