What is EMDR therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a psychotherapy used to treat PTSD and trauma-related distress. It combines attention to a distressing memory with guided bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements. Treatment includes assessment, preparation, processing when appropriate, and attention to how you are doing between sessions.
EMDR involves more than following a moving object on a screen. Your therapist considers your symptoms, history, current supports, and readiness. The goal is to work with difficult experiences in a structured way; the process and outcomes vary from person to person.
Preparation comes first
At Mended Heart, a plan for trauma work begins with understanding you. Sessions may focus on coping, grounding, emotional regulation, and building a therapeutic relationship before memory processing begins. This is particularly relevant when experiences have been repeated or when dissociation is part of the picture.
Jennifer's contribution to EMDRIA's March 2026 article on preparation emphasizes patience and building readiness in complex PTSD. That reflects the practice's approach: treatment moves at a pace you and your therapist can assess together.
EMDR through telehealth
Sessions take place online. You must be physically located in California or Oregon for therapy appointments. You and Jennifer can discuss a private place for sessions, a reliable connection, and whether telehealth is appropriate for your needs. The Laguna Beach address is an administrative mailing address; appointments are provided through telehealth.

Common questions
Can I receive online EMDR therapy in Oregon?
Mended Heart offers telehealth for clients physically located in Oregon and California. The consultation is a chance to discuss your location, needs, and next steps.
Do I start processing memories at the first appointment?
Treatment begins with assessment and preparation. Your therapist discusses readiness and pacing with you before deciding on memory processing.
Is EMDR the same as a three-hour intensive?
EMDR is a treatment approach. An intensive is a longer appointment format. You can discuss which session format may be appropriate rather than choosing a longer session solely because of its length.
How do I begin?
Request a free 15-minute consultation through the secure Sessions Health request page. The consultation is for discussing fit and next steps; it is not an emergency or crisis service.
