🌿 My Journey With EMDR Therapy for Trauma: Why Experience Matters in Healing

When I first began my work as a therapist with children and adults, I quickly noticed something: traditional talk therapy, even cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma-focused CBT, wasn’t enough to fully help people heal from trauma.
Yes, these methods offered coping tools. But they didn’t take away the triggers, those instant physical and emotional reactions to situations that feel unsafe. They didn’t stop the intrusive thoughts or recurring nightmares that haunted clients night after night.
As a young therapist, I realized: there had to be something more.
Discovering EMDR Therapy
That’s when I heard about Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I was intrigued by how different it sounded. EMDR is somatic-based, meaning it works directly with the body’s sensations and nervous system. It helps the brain desensitize trauma responses and, just as importantly, it helps to “make the unconscious conscious.”
This is a major step toward healing; Bringing forward what has been hidden, stuck, or overwhelming, and giving the mind and body a chance to reprocess it in a healthier way.
I decided to take the training, and EMDR turned out to be everything I hoped for.
The Early Days: Learning Through Experience
I’ll be honest: at first, EMDR felt intimidating. Early on, I sometimes got stuck when clients became “stuck” in their processing. I wasn’t always sure how to guide them forward.
But I didn’t give up. I invested in advanced training in EMDR, dissociation, and the psychology of how thoughts and beliefs shape our lives. These trainings gave me the tools to better guide clients through difficult blocks, and to adapt EMDR when things weren’t moving.
And the breakthroughs I began to witness? Absolutely worth it. Clients reporting:
✨ “I don’t react the same way anymore.”
✨ “That nightmare I’ve had for years is gone.”
✨ “I finally feel like I can handle situations that used to overwhelm me.”
That joy of seeing clients freed from triggers, intrusive thoughts, and old patterns, it confirmed that EMDR was the missing piece I had been searching for.
Why Creativity Matters in EMDR
Over the years, I’ve learned that creativity is one of the most important qualities of a successful EMDR therapist.
Everyone is different. Every trauma is unique. Every nervous system responds in its own way. A rigid, “by-the-book” approach won’t work for every client.
For me, EMDR has become like solving a puzzle: finding the right way to gently guide each client into their own healing process. I don’t just follow a manual. I use a blend of clinical expertise, creativity, and intuition to meet clients exactly where they are and lead them forward.
Why Experience Matters
EMDR is powerful, but when it comes to complex trauma and dissociation, experience matters. Not every EMDR-trained therapist is equipped to handle the complexities that can arise in processing.
That’s why it’s important to look for a therapist who is not only EMDR-trained, but also EMDR-certified and experienced in complex trauma. These qualifications mean your therapist has the depth of training, supervision, and clinical hours necessary to handle the challenges that may surface during healing.
At Mended Heart Family Counseling & Trauma Recovery Center, this is my specialty. With years of experience and advanced training in dissociation and trauma, I’ve guided countless clients through the most difficult of histories toward freedom, peace, and empowerment.
When Other Therapies Have Failed…
For clients who feel like they’ve tried everything; Talk therapy, CBT, even trauma-focused CBT, EMDR can be the breakthrough they’ve been waiting for.
It addresses the body, the unconscious, and the emotional system in a way other therapies cannot. It desensitizes the pain, reprocesses the memory, and frees clients from the chains of trauma.
✨ Final Thoughts
My journey with EMDR has taken me from curiosity, to uncertainty, to confidence, and now to deep trust in this method. It has transformed my clients’ lives, and my life as a therapist.
If you’ve been struggling with trauma, triggers, dissociation, or feeling stuck, EMDR may be the therapy that finally brings relief. And with the right therapist, one who is trained, experienced, and creative, it can be life-changing.
